Safer Gambling
StakeScout wants gambling to stay what it should be — entertainment. A night at an online casino should cost what a night out costs: an amount you decided on in advance and can comfortably afford to lose. This page collects the practical tools every UK player has access to, and where to get free, confidential help if gambling stops feeling like fun.
If you need help now: call the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 — free, confidential and open 24/7.
Practical tools that work
Deposit limits
Every UKGC-licensed casino lets you cap how much you can deposit per day, week or month — and since October 2025, UK players must set a deposit limit before making their first deposit. Choose a number based on your entertainment budget, not your best month, and treat it as fixed. Lowering a limit takes effect immediately; raising one has a cooling-off delay by design.
Time limits and reality checks
Reality checks are on-screen reminders showing how long you’ve been playing and your net position. Sessions pass quickly inside a game; a reminder every 30 or 60 minutes keeps the clock honest. Most sites also offer session time limits that log you out automatically.
Cool-off periods (time-outs)
If you want a short break, every licensed site offers time-outs from 24 hours up to six weeks. Your account is locked for the period — no deposits, no play, no marketing.
Track your spending
Licensed casinos must show your full deposit, loss and play history. Look at it monthly, the way you would a bank statement. If the number surprises you, that is useful information — act on it.
Self-exclusion: GAMSTOP
GAMSTOP is the UK’s free national online self-exclusion scheme. Register once — it takes about five minutes — and every online casino and bookmaker licensed by the UK Gambling Commission must prevent you from playing for the period you choose: six months, one year or five years. It cannot be reversed early, which is exactly the point.
Alongside GAMSTOP, two further layers make a break stick:
- Gamban — software that blocks gambling sites and apps on your devices, free for UK residents through TalkBanStop;
- Bank gambling blocks — most major UK banks (Monzo, Starling, Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds and others) can block gambling transactions on your card from within their app, usually with a 48-hour or 72-hour delay to lift.
Used together — GAMSTOP, Gamban and a bank block — these are known as the TalkBanStop combination, and GamCare advisers can help you set all three up.
Ask yourself honestly
- Am I betting more than I can afford to lose?
- Am I chasing losses, or gambling to escape worries?
- Have I lied to people close to me about how much I gamble?
- Do I feel restless or irritable when I try to cut down?
- Has gambling ever come before bills, food or family?
A “yes” to any of these is worth a conversation with the National Gambling Helpline — no judgment, no obligation, just someone who has heard it all before and knows what helps.

Under 18?
Gambling is strictly for adults aged 18 and over. It is illegal for anyone under 18 to gamble online in the UK, and this website is not intended for minors. If you are a parent, free tools such as Gamban and device-level parental controls can block gambling content on your child’s devices.
